At Petluv, we believe in the healing power of the human–animal bond. Our mission is to support pet lovers and handlers who want to share their pet’s gentle spirit with others through therapy visits. Whether you're a beginner or seasoned pro, we aim to inspire, educate and motivate you to show others that you care about them.
Basic obedience; using classes, books or videos that are based on Positive Reinforcement Training. Always train your pet personally; this helps maintain the human-animal bond.
A dog must know how to sit, stay, down, walk on a loose leash and leave it. Other species of pet therapy animals require less stringent requirements. Check with the organization that you plan on joining for guidance.
If you have a puppy (under 6 mos.), take them walking, take them for car rides, let them experience all sorts of sights, sounds, smells, people and other sociable animals. Watch their reaction; if showing signs of stress - stop immediately. Re-assess and check with a trainer for guidance if possible.
Older animals can use similar methods and adding busier environments. Other species can modify some of the ideas above. Go to any pet friendly store and practice your commands - ride on an elevator if possible!
First of all, you need to know your pet and their temperament & personality. Are they shy and reserved or confident and predictable? Sometimes, you have to try out a new place and see if they like it and how they interact with the kids or other people. If you see them showing stress signals, excuse yourself and find another facility or event. You must work to protect your animal at all costs.
Becoming a Pet Therapy Team requires commitment of time and resources.
Time includes all training classes, navigating the information from various facilities and/or organizations, keeping up with additional training and staying current with any specific requirements after becoming a Certified Team.
Resources includes yearly veterinarian visits, recertification fees and any apparel needed to identify you or your pet as a member of a group.
Each month we celebrate a special Petluv therapy team that brings love, comfort, and joy to others.
